Winchmore Hill Crime Prevention

The idea of this page is to be a wide ranging resource to refer to in order to understand how the area is policed,  how to get information about crime in the area, how to prevent it and what you can do to make sure when it happens it is reported correctly. The important thing is that we do what we can as a community to prevent crime and maintain a dialogue with the police to help them police the area effectively.

Our local police – the ward team

In our local police team we currently have a Sergeant (who covers several local wards) , a PO (Police Officer) and a PCSO (Police Community Support Officer).  We should have two POs

They are in theory dedicated to patrolling and responding to calls within the Winchmore Hill area however as I am sure you can imagine there is a lack of resource across the borough and they can get called to neighbouring areas at a moment’s notice.

They do feel a strong connection to the area and they genuinely want to make sure that they do whatever they can with our help to eradicate crime, deter crimes before they are committed and follow up on crimes and concerns as quickly as effectively as possible.

If you have concerns about a crime (not one taking place at the time) or other police matters such as anti-social behaviour, suspicious behaviour, possible drug dealing etc then please do email them. They value the intelligence and will make a point of looking at this and use this to build a picture on what is going on locally that can lead to police operations and arrests.

The email address to be used for contact with our officers is below.

The SNT meetings

As a part of the Metropolitan Police’s strategy to engage with the community there is a quarterly meeting between a working group of people in the community charied by Jillie Sutton a local resident and our local safer neighbourhood team which is the ward team. There might also be police officers from neighbouring wards and sometimes senior officers from across the ward or occasionally the Borough Commander!

We will report back to residents some information from this meeting and the priorities which get decided during the meeting for the next quarter. If you have a particular concern you would like to raise then you can ask for an invite to the next meeting, please email us at info@whresidents.org and we will pass this on to Jillie.

Met Engage

Met Engage is a website and two way communication channel where you can sign up to receive information from the police, both immediate when there is information they want to share quickly and also where you can get the monthly newsletter outlining information about the crime in our local are as well as being a hub for information about reporting crime and crime prevention.

You can sign up here: https://www.metengage.co.uk/

Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch still exists and is still very relevant and can work hand in hand with local WhatsApp groups that operate across Winchmore Hill and is another way that the police share information locally.

There are not that many groups currently in our area, there is one in Station Road and Hazel Green Close, Compton Road and Fernleigh Road.

If you want to set one up you can do so here: https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/

It makes sense to promote this via your local WhatsApp group if there is one so that everyone in your road is on the Neighbourhood Watch as well.

If there isn’t a local WhatsApp group for your road then it is very easy to set one up. The person leading the group generally prints a letter explaining that they want to set up a group and who it is for and puts this through everyone’s letter box in the road and those who want to sign up use the code or send a message asking to join and are added by the administrator.

We ask if you set one up please tell us about it and who heads it up so we can direct people who are in your road and ask about WhatsApp groups to the group so they can join.
